CASYA 33 – St Mary CATECHISM CENTRE, Alice Springs

The St. Mary’s Syro Malabar Mission Sunday Catechism began its journey on February 14, 2016, under the spiritual guidance of Rev. Fr. Varghese Vavolil, Director of Catechism for the Eparchy of Melbourne. Starting with just 10 teachers and 53 students, the program has grown into a vibrant and flourishing community of faith. From these humble beginnings, the catechism has continued to grow—blessed by the pastoral leadership of Fr. Binish Narimattathil, and further enriched through the dedicated service of Fr. Leonse Moosariparambil, Fr. Francis, Fr. Joe Jacob SVD, Fr. Denni Thomas Nedumpathathil, and now, Fr. John Puthuva, our current Parish Priest. Fr. John Puthuva faithfully serves both the Darwin and Alice Springs Syro-Malabar Missions. On the third Sunday of each month, his visit includes Holy Qurbana followed by catechism, creating a spiritually rich and nurturing environment for our students and families. His commitment is deeply appreciated by the Alice Springs community, where he stays for a week or more at a time, celebrating daily Holy Qurbana and ministering to the spiritual needs of the faithful.

Over time, the catechism program has developed into a dynamic formation initiative. Through efforts such as attendance and academic achievement awards, the integration of official Syro-Malabar catechism textbooks, and active student participation in liturgy, Bible reading, and competitions, the program continues to foster a strong faith foundation. Key annual events include the Bible Quiz, Faith Fest, Bible Kalolsavam, All Saints’ Day, Mission Sunday, and the Catechism Annual Day. The formation of the Catechism Students Council has empowered students to grow as young leaders, actively contributing to the spiritual life of the community. Today, catechism classes serve more than 165 students, from Transition to Year 12, supported by a team of over 35 dedicated catechists. Classes are held every Sunday from 10:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., fostering a consistent and meaningful engagement with faith. As we look to the future, the mission remains unwavering in its goal: to form a generation rooted deeply in Christian faith, Syro-Malabar tradition, and Gospel values. All glory to God!
