CASYA 07 – Mary Matha CATECHISM CENTRE, Gold Coast

The dawn of the 21st century witnessed a quiet but significant migration of families from Kerala, India, to the sun-kissed shores of the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia. These early Malayali settlers brought with them not only their hopes and dreams but also a deep-rooted Catholic faith, passed down through generations — a faith that would soon form the cornerstone of a vibrant spiritual community. From humble beginnings, the Gold Coast Mary Matha Mission was born — not in grandeur or ceremony, but in the intimate sanctity of family homes. A small group of 10 devout Malayali Catholic families gathered regularly to pray and to celebrate the Holy Mass, nurturing their traditions with heartfelt devotion.

This spiritual journey formally began in early 2008, when the first Holy Mass was celebrated by Rev. Fr. Thomas Areekuzhi. That moment marked the genesis of a mission destined to flourish in faith, unity, and community. In those formative years, the Mission was sustained by the generosity of families who opened their homes for the celebration of the Holy Eucharist. Their hospitality and dedication are remembered with profound gratitude. As the number of faithful gradually grew, the monthly Kontha Namaskaram (Rosary devotion) was introduced in 2009, further binding the community in prayer and shared purpose. As gatherings began to exceed the capacity of private homes, the Mission reached out to various Catholic parishes across the Gold Coast. Holy Masses were graciously hosted in churches such as Sacred Heart Church in Clear Island Waters, Surfers Paradise Catholic Church, and Guardian Angels Church in Southport, depending on priest and venue availability. With the kind support of Fr. Jan Joseph, regular Sunday Holy Masses were later established at St. Joseph’s Church in Labrador. During these crucial years, several devoted priests served the Mission with selfless zeal, including Fr. Jose Thekkemuriyil, Fr. Reji Gervasis, Fr. Fernandes, Fr. Josen, Fr. Dantus, and Fr. Thomas. Their spiritual guidance and pastoral care laid a strong foundation for what would become a flourishing Catholic Mission. The community remains ever thankful for their service and their pivotal role in shaping its identity. A significant milestone was reached on 8th June 2014, when Bishop Emeritus Bosco Puthur, accompanied by Fr. Peter Kavumpuram, visited the Mission. On that blessed day, the Bishop celebrated the Holy Mass and administered the Sacrament of First Holy Communion to the children of the community — a deeply cherished event in the life of the Mission. Following this, Fr. Peter Kavumpuram began celebrating the Holy Mass regularly on the second and fourth Sundays of each month. Around this time, informal catechism classes also began, marking the beginning of structured faith formation for the younger generation. In 2016, catechism classes were formally organised to align with the academic calendar. Dedicated teachers worked tirelessly to pass on the richness of Catholic faith, doctrine, and tradition. During a brief absence of Fr. Peter due to medical treatment, Fr. Varghese Vavolil temporarily took charge of the Mission. Later in 2016, Fr. Abraham Kazhunadiyil assumed the role of parish priest. Under his guidance, the celebration of Sunday Mass became a weekly tradition, and catechism classes were conducted regularly each Sunday. The community also transitioned to St Brigid’s Catholic Church in Nerang, offering a more suitable and sacred space for the growing congregation. In May 2019, Fr. Varghese Vavolil was formally appointed as parish priest, and from April 2021 to August 2023, the Mission was shepherded by Fr. Anto Chiriyankandath. During this period, the Mission witnessed further spiritual and structural growth. Family units were established based on geographical boundaries and household numbers, fostering a stronger sense of fellowship and mutual support.
