Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EMHC) are lay faithful who assist the priest in the distribution of the Holy Qurbana when there is a pastoral need. In the Syro-Malabar tradition, this ministry is carried out with deep reverence, humility, and awareness of the real presence of Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist.

The ministry is considered extraordinary, meaning it supplements—but never replaces—the ordinary ministry of the priest.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Assisting in the distribution of the Holy Eucharist during the Holy Qurbana.

  • Taking Holy Communion to the sick, homebound, and elderly.

  • Handling the sacred species with utmost reverence.

  • Upholding prayerful silence and devotion in the sanctuary.

  • Ensuring decorum and assisting in maintaining the dignity of the liturgy.

“As extraordinary ministers you are sharing in the fullness of Christ’s priestly ministry.”

Prayer Before Serving as EMHC

Heavenly Father,
thank You for calling me to serve at Your altar. As I distribute the Body and Blood of Your Son, purify my heart and strengthen my faith. Help me handle this sacred mystery with reverence, humility, and devotion. Holy Spirit, guide my words and actions so that those who receive the Holy Qurbana may be filled with Your grace and peace. Amen.
