On 24 December 2015, during the Christmas Midnight Mass, His Grace Mar Bosco Puthur, Bishop of the Eparchy of St Thomas the Apostle, formally erected the St Alphonsa community as the Cathedral Parish of the Syro-Malabar Eparchy of Melbourne and appointed Rev. Fr Mathew Kochupurackal as its inaugural Vicar. Owing to the dispersion of families across Melbourne’s northern growth corridors, the parish quickly became one of the largest catechetical centres in Australia, enrolling approximately 500–600 students for Sunday-school each week. To accommodate this growth, classes were held concurrently at two satellite campuses—Craigieburn and Reservoir. In April 2021, Rev. Fr Varghese Vavolil assumed pastoral leadership as Parish Vicar. On 23 November 2024 the new cathedral complex in Epping was solemnly consecrated. The purpose-built church and adjoining hall now provide dedicated facilities for faith-formation and greatly streamline weekly logistics. Rev. Fr Mathew Areeplackal has been appointed as the Vicar for the Parish in March 2025.
